On the beach in Zurich
1993
I visited a toy shop along the stone pavement in Zurich. Looking around the shop for sometime, I found a cardboard box in the corner. In it were plastic animals and creatures of different kinds. Soon I found myself playing on the floor of the shop. First I grabbed an octopus and made it crawl on the floor. It looked alive. I then placed a gorilla, a tiger, a shark next to the octopus, followed by a dolphin, a giraffe, a rhinoceros, and a dinosaur. I pulled out a donkey from the bottom of the box, and put it in front of the octopus, face to face. Their eyes met, and suddenly they appeared to have been staring at each other for a long time. It all happened on a beach. Gradually, I started to feel the distance grow, taking me further and further, and yet, the events were still unfolding in front of my eyes.
